Vibrant Health Advocates – Lumen produces plain-language, read-aloud health guides for adults with low literacy in Musselburgh and the wider East Lothian community, so that every resident can understand their health, make informed choices, and speak up for themselves with confidence.
See our workToo many people in Musselburgh leave a GP appointment unsure of what they have been told, avoid seeking help because the letters feel impossible to decode, or miss out on vital NHS services because the information simply never reached them in a form they could use.
Vibrant Health Advocates – Lumen was established to close that gap. We work directly with local adults who find written health information difficult, producing audio guides, plain-English leaflets, and face-to-face read-aloud sessions that turn complex clinical and public-health messages into words, phrases, and formats that make sense in everyday life.
Rooted in Musselburgh's tight-knit communities — from the Fisherrow harbour quarter to the newer estates along the Esk — we meet people where they are, without judgement, and make sure that low reading confidence is never the reason someone misses a smear appointment, misunderstands a medication dosage, or feels excluded from a conversation about their own wellbeing.
Every service we offer is free, unhurried, and designed specifically for people who find standard health information difficult to use.
Our trained volunteers read health information aloud in community settings across Musselburgh, from the library on Musselburgh High Street to local sheltered housing lounges. We use natural, conversational language — no jargon, no small print, no assumptions about prior knowledge.
Every leaflet and guide we produce is tested with real community members before it goes to print, ensuring readability at a level that works for people who struggle with standard NHS written materials. Our resources are free to pick up at pharmacies, GP waiting rooms, and community centres across East Lothian.
We support individuals to understand letters from their GP, hospital, or local authority — sitting alongside them, reading the document together, and helping them formulate questions to ask at their next appointment. This one-to-one navigation service is confidential, unhurried, and completely free of charge.
On any given week, a volunteer might sit with a 68-year-old man in sheltered housing and carefully read through a cardiology appointment letter that arrived two weeks ago and has been sitting on the table, unread and anxiety-inducing, ever since.
In a community centre meeting room, a group of six adults might be listening to a plain-language guide about bowel cancer screening, asking questions freely in a setting where no question feels embarrassing or too basic.
These moments are the substance of our work. We do not offer clinical advice, and we do not replace the NHS — we make the NHS more reachable.
