Vibrant Health Advocates – Lumen grew out of conversations that began in a community café on Musselburgh High Street, where a small group of local residents and health workers kept encountering the same problem. People were leaving appointments confused, ignoring letters they could not read, and making health decisions based on guesswork rather than guidance — not because they did not care about their health, but because the system's written materials consistently left them behind.
One of our founders, a retired community nurse who had spent decades working in East Lothian, began informally reading health leaflets aloud to neighbours and friends. Word spread. Demand grew. It became clear that what was needed was not just a goodwill gesture but a structured, sustainable organisation with the resources to meet the scale of the need.
The charity was formally constituted as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation to give the work a proper legal and financial foundation. From our first read-aloud session in a sheltered housing common room in Musselburgh, we have grown steadily, adding programmes, training more volunteers, developing new resources, and deepening our relationships with local GP practices, pharmacies, and NHS Lothian community health teams.
We remain proudly small-town in our approach: personal, unhurried, and relentlessly specific to the people and the place we serve.
