Every form of support — time, money, or partnership — directly extends our reach.
It exists because local people care about local people, and it keeps going because residents, health workers, businesses, and supporters across East Lothian choose to be part of it.
Whether you have an hour a week to give as a volunteer, a contribution to make as a donor, or a professional relationship to offer as a partner organisation, there is a meaningful way for you to be part of what we do. Every form of support — large or small — directly extends our reach and helps more people in Musselburgh understand and act on health information that matters to them.
All three routes are open right now. We would love to hear from you however you would like to be involved.
We train local volunteers to run read-aloud sessions and provide one-to-one health navigation support — no healthcare background required, just patience, warmth, and a willingness to learn. Most of our volunteers give two to four hours a week and tell us it is some of the most meaningful time they spend.
Become a volunteerYour donation funds the production and distribution of plain-language health guides, the training of new volunteers, and the running costs that keep our community sessions open and free. Even a small regular gift makes a significant difference to a charity of our size operating in one community.
Make a donationIf you work in a GP practice, pharmacy, community organisation, or local business in East Lothian, we would love to explore how we can work together — whether that means hosting our guides in your waiting room, referring individuals to our navigation service, or co-producing new resources. We are always open to conversations about collaboration.

Lumen volunteers come from all walks of life. What they share is a willingness to sit with someone, take things at the pace that person needs, and make sure that no question is too basic and no letter is too confusing to work through together.
We provide full training in plain-language communication and active listening before you begin, and ongoing support from our staff team throughout. You will be assigned to sessions and navigation visits in your local area, at times that suit your schedule.
Volunteers often tell us that the work changes how they think about health communication — and that it is among the most directly meaningful things they have ever done. If you would like to find out more, please get in touch and we will arrange an informal conversation with our volunteer coordinator.
Enquire about volunteeringWe are a lean charity with a clear purpose. We do not have layers of administration between your support and the moment a volunteer sits down with someone in Musselburgh and makes a confusing letter make sense. That is where your support goes.
